Sylvan sounds of subversive jazz
A mix of piano and saxophone sounds - with more than a hint of subversive funk - will fill Adamstown¹s dungeon jazz venue this month when the Paul McNamara quartet features special guest, Sylvan ŒSchmoe¹ Elhay.
Described as one of the most pleasing, accomplished and creative pianists around, Paul McNamara has called in the legendary Dave Pudney (bass) and ex-pat local, Nic Cicere, (drums) to complete the line up for next Thursday¹s (August 7) concert.
While perhaps better known in Melbourne, Sydney, Adelaide and Perth, special guest saxophonist ŒSchmoe¹ Elhay began his classic, rock and jazz career in the 1980¹s. He has his own band, has featured many times live on ABC radio, is a regular at Australian jazz festivals and has been touring Australia and the world for thirty years.
Along the way he¹s taught at Stanford University jazz clinics alongside Stan Getz, Bobby ŒDon¹t Worry, Be Happy¹ McFerrin, Joe Henderson and Kenny Barron. He has also featured at more than half a dozen San Francisco jazz venues including the Crazy Horse Bar.
³It¹s always great to showcase both local and national jazz figures,² dungeonjazz coordinator Rod Barnes said this week. ³This concert continues our tradition of presenting performers who you would not normally get to see and hear outside the capital cities. And, of course, we provide the bonus of our own unique performer and audience friendly, space.²
